Apple is making exciting strides toward bringing under-display Face ID to the iPhone 18 Pro models expected next year. A trusted Chinese leaker known as “Smart Pikachu” on Weibo has revealed that Apple is testing a special “spliced micro-transparent glass” window embedded within the display. This innovation aims to allow the TrueDepth system’s infrared sensors to function seamlessly through the screen without distortion.

This technique resembles industry methods that use micro-perforated or nano-patterned glass to enhance infrared transmission precisely where the sensor array sits. The leak suggests that Apple’s suppliers are already ramping up preparations to support potential production of this new technology.
What About the Dynamic Island?
Rumors have swirled about whether the iPhone 18 Pro will retain the Dynamic Island feature. Earlier reports from The Information hinted that the iPhone 18 Pro might ditch the Dynamic Island for a simple pinhole cutout at the upper left of the display. However, other insiders, including analyst Ross Young and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, expect a smaller, slimmer Dynamic Island instead.
The new leak supports the idea of a reduced Dynamic Island, with the micro-transparent glass enabling TrueDepth components to move under the screen while still leaving room for a smaller front camera cutout.
Release Timeline and Other Models
Apple is anticipated to launch the iPhone 18 Pro models in September 2026, alongside a brand-new foldable iPhone as part of a split release cycle. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 and a more affordable iPhone 18e are expected to arrive in early 2027.
As always, Apple’s development roadmap looks far ahead, and this leak adds to the growing picture of what to expect from the next-generation iPhones. Stay tuned for more updates as the launch approaches!
