Apple’s iPhone 20 Promises a Revolutionary Display Design
Apple is gearing up to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its iconic iPhone with a major design overhaul for the iPhone 20, expected to launch in the third quarter of 2027. According to recent reports, the company will skip the ‘iPhone 19’ name and instead introduce a model featuring a fully bezel-less display with a unique ‘four-sided bending design’. This new design is set to redefine smartphone aesthetics by eliminating visible cutouts and pushing the boundaries of screen technology.
Innovative Display Features and Technical Challenges
The iPhone 20’s display will stand apart from current industry standards by curving on all four corners, requiring the panel circuit to bend within the bezel area. Achieving this effect involves making the Thin-Film Encapsulation (TFE) layer, which protects the OLED from moisture, significantly thinner. Moreover, the front-facing camera, TrueDepth sensor, and other essential components will be embedded beneath the display to complete the seamless ‘all screen’ look, removing any need for notches or punch-holes.
Earlier rumours suggest that Apple is experimenting with under-display Face ID technology on the upcoming iPhone 18 series and the iPhone Fold, which could pave the way for this fully integrated front camera system. The iPhone 20 is expected to build on these advancements, delivering a truly uninterrupted display experience.
LG’s Major Investment to Support Production
To meet the demanding requirements of the iPhone 20’s innovative design, LG is reportedly planning a substantial investment of nearly $300 million (400 billion won) to overhaul its display manufacturing facilities. This revamp includes setting up around 10 new production lines dedicated to producing the four-sided bending OLED panels required for Apple’s next-generation device. Such extensive modifications highlight the complexity and scale of the manufacturing process needed for this futuristic screen technology.
While Samsung has been Apple’s primary supplier of OLED panels, particularly for foldable devices, it remains unclear how the South Korean giant will respond to the iPhone 20’s display needs. Given Samsung’s history of supplying the majority of Apple’s OLED screens, it is likely they will also invest heavily to support mass production of these advanced displays.
Looking Ahead
The iPhone 20 represents a significant leap forward in smartphone design, combining cutting-edge display technology with a bold aesthetic vision. As Apple and its partners like LG prepare for production, the coming years will be crucial in realising this ambitious concept. Fans and industry watchers should keep an eye on further developments regarding under-display camera technology and the manufacturing innovations that will bring the iPhone 20’s bezel-less design to life.
