Qualcomm’s Upcoming Snapdragon Chips and Their Impact on Flagship Pricing

Qualcomm is reportedly working on two new flagship Snapdragon chips built on TSMC’s cutting-edge 2nm process, known by their codenames SM8975 and SM8950. According to leaker Digital Chat Station, the SM8975 is positioned as a “Pro” variant that supports LPDDR6 RAM and features a full GPU and cache configuration. However, this advanced specification comes at a steep cost, which could result in significantly higher prices for Ultra-tier flagship smartphones.

The SM8950, on the other hand, is expected to be the standard flagship chip without LPDDR6 support, potentially serving as the more affordable option for non-Ultra flagships. There’s also speculation that some mid-range or Pro-level devices might continue using the current-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (SM8850) to manage costs.

Key Specifications and Cost Implications

The SM8975’s exclusive support for LPDDR6 RAM is a notable upgrade, promising faster memory speeds and improved performance. However, the ongoing global RAM shortage has driven LPDDR6 prices up, compounding the already high cost of this new silicon. This combination is likely to inflate the retail price of Ultra flagships that adopt the SM8975 chip, making them even more expensive than current models.

Meanwhile, the SM8950 is expected to omit LPDDR6 support, which could help manufacturers keep prices more reasonable for their standard flagship models. This tiered approach in Qualcomm’s lineup suggests that Android brands may have to carefully balance performance and cost, especially for devices outside the Ultra category.

Context and Naming Expectations

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 series has been the backbone of premium Android smartphones for years. Last year, the company introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 alongside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, both manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm node. The introduction of a “Pro” variant at the 2nm node could represent a new strategy to differentiate Ultra flagships further.

If Qualcomm sticks to its usual naming conventions, the SM8975 might be branded as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, while the SM8950 could be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. However, Qualcomm is known for occasionally changing its naming schemes, so these names are not guaranteed. Interestingly, there have been no leaks yet about a Snapdragon 8 Gen 6 (non-Elite), leaving some uncertainty about the full lineup.

What Lies Ahead for Android Flagships

The prospect of Ultra flagships becoming even more expensive raises questions about market demand and pricing elasticity. While enthusiasts are typically willing to pay a premium for top-tier hardware, there is a limit to how high prices can climb before demand diminishes. Manufacturers might therefore reserve the SM8975 chip for their highest-end models, while using the SM8950 or existing chips to maintain competitive pricing on other flagships.

We can expect Qualcomm to reveal more details about these next-generation chips in the coming months. For now, Android fans and industry watchers should keep an eye on how these developments influence flagship pricing and performance in the near future.
