Apple to Remove Physical SIM Slots on iPhone 18 Pro Models

Apple appears to be continuing its move towards eSIM technology with the upcoming launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which are now tipped to be offered exclusively as eSIM-only variants. This shift follows similar rumours surrounding the forthcoming iPhone Fold, which is also expected to omit a physical SIM card slot due to its slim design constraints. By removing the SIM tray, Apple aims to free up internal space within the Pro models.

Key Specifications and Features

According to reports from TechManiacs, the elimination of the physical SIM slot will allow Apple to equip the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max with larger batteries. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, in particular, is expected to house a battery capacity between 5,100mAh and 5,200mAh, surpassing the 5,000mAh capacity initially rumoured for the non-eSIM variant. This change suggests that Apple may forgo releasing any non-eSIM versions of these models altogether.

In addition to battery improvements, the iPhone 18 Pro duo is anticipated to feature upgraded wireless components, including the N2 wireless networking chip and the C2 modem. The C2 modem is notable for supporting both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G bands and is manufactured using TSMC’s 4nm process. When paired with the A20 Pro system-on-chip, which utilises a 2nm fabrication process, these components could deliver enhanced power efficiency and performance.

Context and Pricing Strategy

Apple’s move to eSIM-only models aligns with a broader industry trend towards embedded SIM technology, which offers benefits such as improved device waterproofing and more internal space for other hardware enhancements. The iPhone Fold’s ultra-thin design reportedly necessitates this approach, and now the Pro models are set to follow suit.

Despite these hardware changes, Apple is expected to maintain the pricing of the iPhone 18 Pro series close to that of the current generation. Industry analyst GF Securities suggests that the iPhone 18 Pro will likely launch at around $1,099, with the Pro Max model priced at approximately $1,199. This pricing strategy indicates Apple’s intention to keep the new devices accessible within their established premium segment.

What to Expect Next

With the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max scheduled for a September launch, Apple fans and tech enthusiasts should watch for official confirmations regarding the eSIM-only design and battery capacities. The transition to eSIM could mark a significant step in Apple’s device evolution, potentially influencing future models across its product lineup.
