Apple Begins iOS 26.4 Beta Cycle with Exciting New Features

Apple has unexpectedly kicked off the iOS 26.4 update cycle about a week ahead of schedule by releasing the first developer beta builds. This rollout includes not only iOS 26.4 but also updates for iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS, HomePod software, and macOS Tahoe, marking a broad platform refresh. One of the headline features in this new beta is enhanced support for video-based podcasts within the Apple Podcasts app, signalling Apple’s push to improve multimedia podcast experiences.

Key Features and Improvements in iOS 26.4

The iOS 26.4 beta introduces a significant upgrade to the Apple Podcasts app, enabling users to seamlessly switch between watching a video podcast and listening to its audio counterpart. This “enhanced video podcast experience” also brings dynamic video ads, allowing for more engaging and flexible advertising opportunities. A technical highlight is the integration of HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology, which optimises video playback quality based on network conditions without compromising audio performance. This also enables users to download video podcasts for offline viewing, enhancing convenience for podcast enthusiasts.

Security and privacy see advancements as well, with an early test of end-to-end encryption (E2E) for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messages now included. RCS messaging enhances communication between iPhones and Android devices by supporting high-resolution media sharing, typing indicators, read receipts, and better group chat management. The new toggle in the Settings app lets users enable or disable E2E encryption for RCS, which is enabled by default. Currently, this encryption applies only to iPhone-to-iPhone RCS messages, providing a secure alternative for those opting out of iMessage. When active, a lock icon appears in chat threads to indicate encryption.

Another notable security feature enabled by default in iOS 26.4 is Stolen Device Protection. This requires Face ID or Touch ID authentication to access sensitive iPhone functions such as the Passwords app, Lost mode in the Find My app, and Safari purchases, adding an extra layer of protection against unauthorised access.

Visual and Usability Enhancements

Apple has also refreshed the Music app with a new full-screen design for albums and playlists, providing a more immersive listening experience. The tracklist background now dynamically complements the album artwork, creating a visually cohesive interface. Additionally, users can discover concerts nearby directly from the Music app, integrating live music discovery into their listening habits.

The Wallpaper Gallery app has been redesigned with new categories and improved responsiveness, offering users a smoother and more enjoyable experience when customising their device’s appearance.

Broader Platform Updates

Alongside iOS 26.4, Apple is rolling out first developer beta builds for several other platforms, including iPadOS 26.4, watchOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4, HomePod Software 26.4, and macOS Tahoe 26.4. This coordinated update cycle suggests Apple is preparing a comprehensive set of enhancements across its ecosystem.

With these early beta releases, developers and enthusiasts can begin exploring the new features and optimisations Apple is bringing to its devices. The focus on video podcasts, messaging security, and user interface improvements highlights Apple’s ongoing efforts to refine both functionality and user experience.

As the beta testing progresses, it will be interesting to see how these features evolve and which additional enhancements Apple may introduce before the public release. Users keen on multimedia, privacy, and seamless device interaction should keep an eye on further updates in this cycle.
