Apple’s A20 Pro Chip to Power Next-Gen iPhones with Advanced Packaging and Capacitors

Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip, set to power the iPhone Fold as well as the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, promises significant technological advancements. According to analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities, the new chip will incorporate groundbreaking WMCM packaging and super-high-performance metal-insulator-metal (SHPMIM) capacitors, which are expected to enhance stability, efficiency, and overall performance substantially.

Key Features of the A20 Pro Chip and Device Specifications

The A20 Pro chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, marking a leap forward in semiconductor technology. One of the most notable changes is the shift from InFO packaging to WMCM packaging. This method allows multiple individual dies, such as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine, to be combined into a single package. This integration not only increases design flexibility but also frees up internal space, potentially allowing for larger batteries or other components. WMCM packaging achieves this by eliminating the need for a traditional interposer or substrate and utilising Molding Underfill (MUF) to reduce material use and manufacturing complexity. Additionally, RAM will be integrated directly into the module, further streamlining the design.

Another critical enhancement is the introduction of SHPMIM capacitors in the A20 Pro chip’s power delivery system. These capacitors offer more than double the capacitance density compared to previous generations, while also cutting sheet resistance and via resistance by approximately 50 percent. This improvement is expected to contribute to better power efficiency and chip stability.

What to Expect from the iPhone 18 Pro Series and iPhone Fold

Beyond the chip itself, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models will feature a 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display respectively, while Apple’s first foldable device will sport a 5.3-inch external display alongside a 7.8-inch internal screen. The foldable design is anticipated to follow a passport-style, wide form factor, aligning with earlier rumours about Apple’s approach to foldables.

Camera setups will be equally impressive. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to include an 18MP 6P front camera, a 48MP 7P main camera with variable aperture, a 48MP periscope telephoto lens, and a 48MP 6P ultra-wide sensor. Meanwhile, the iPhone Fold will feature dual 18MP front cameras—one on each display—and two 48MP rear cameras with 7P and 6P lenses.

Additional Design and Hardware Details

Apple is also refining biometric authentication methods across these devices. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will continue to use Face ID housed within a smaller Dynamic Island, while the iPhone Fold is expected to rely on Touch ID. Material choices differ as well: the Pro models will have aluminium casings, whereas the foldable will combine aluminium and titanium, possibly featuring a liquid metal hinge for enhanced durability and premium feel.

All three devices will be equipped with Apple’s C2 modem and 12GB of LPD5 RAM, ensuring robust connectivity and multitasking capabilities. These specifications suggest Apple is aiming to deliver a high-performance trio that caters to different user preferences, from traditional flagship smartphones to its first foldable offering.

Context and Outlook

Jeff Pu’s analysis also highlights Apple’s ambitious shipment target of 250 million iPhones in 2026, representing a 2 percent year-over-year growth despite broader industry challenges such as the ongoing memory shortage. This forecast underscores Apple’s confidence in its upcoming devices and the A20 Pro chip’s role in driving innovation.

As Apple prepares to unveil these new products, the integration of WMCM packaging and SHPMIM capacitors in the A20 Pro chip marks a significant step forward in smartphone technology. Fans and industry watchers will be keen to see how these advancements translate into real-world performance and user experience when the iPhone 18 Pro series and iPhone Fold eventually launch.
