January Android Security Bulletin Released

Google has published the Android Security Bulletin for January 2026, addressing a critical vulnerability that affects a wide range of Android devices. This flaw involves a zero-click attack vector triggered by a specially crafted audio file, which can cause the media player to crash and potentially allow malicious code execution without user interaction. The vulnerability exploits the manipulation of extra metadata, known as evolution data, embedded within audio files.

Details on the Vulnerability and Its Impact

According to security researchers at Wiz, this vulnerability enables attackers to exploit the audio file’s additional information, forcing the media player to crash across numerous devices. On Android platforms, the threat is particularly severe as it can be triggered simply by receiving or opening the malicious file via messaging applications, requiring no user action beyond that. Dolby had previously acknowledged in October that this bug could increase the risk of exploitation, especially when combined with other known vulnerabilities affecting Pixel devices.

Pixel Devices and the Update Situation

Interestingly, Google had already addressed this specific exploit on Pixel smartphones with the December 2025 security update, which may explain why no separate Pixel update has been issued in January 2026. However, Pixel users are still facing several other unresolved issues, including a persistent bug causing the Pixel 10’s display to become unresponsive randomly. While Google does not adhere to a fixed update schedule and sometimes releases patches later in the month—as seen with the November update arriving on the 11th—there remains anticipation for a forthcoming update to tackle these outstanding problems.

Looking Ahead

While the Android source code now includes the fix for the critical audio file vulnerability, it will take time for manufacturers to roll out the necessary security updates to their devices. In the meantime, Google Pixel owners and other Android users are advised to install the latest available security patches to protect their devices. We will continue to monitor the situation for any new developments or updates from Google regarding Pixel bug fixes.
