Google Advances AI Music Creation Beyond Apple’s Current Capabilities
Apple recently introduced a new AI feature in its Apple Music app that allows users to generate playlists from text prompts, a step that highlights the company’s cautious approach to AI integration. However, Google has taken a more ambitious leap with its newly unveiled Lyria 3 model, which can create entire 30-second music tracks from either text or image prompts. This stark contrast showcases how far Google’s AI technology has progressed compared to Apple’s relatively modest AI rollout.
Key Features of Google’s Lyria 3 Model
Google’s Lyria 3 model, currently in beta, enables users to describe an idea or upload an image to generate original music tracks. For example, a prompt like “a comical R&B slow jam about a sock finding their match” can be transformed into a high-quality, catchy song in just seconds. The model also allows users to upload inspiration material, pushing creative boundaries further by tailoring music based on the input provided. This represents a significant advancement in AI-driven music generation, moving beyond simple playlist curation to actual content creation.
Apple’s AI Efforts and Future Prospects
Apple’s AI feature in Apple Music, introduced with the iOS 16.4 update, focuses on creating playlists from text prompts, which, while useful, is a far cry from generating original music tracks. The company’s broader AI ambitions hinge on the upcoming revamped Siri, expected to launch later this year. This new Siri will incorporate Gemini-backed AI, promising enhanced in-app actions, personal context awareness, and on-screen understanding to enable more intelligent voice assistant interactions.
However, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s plans for the revamped Siri have encountered delays, with the rollout of its features now expected to be gradual throughout the year rather than in a single launch. More substantial improvements are anticipated with iOS 17, including a dedicated Siri chatbot that may run on Google’s TPUs and cloud infrastructure. This chatbot is rumoured to utilise an advanced version of Google’s Gemini model, internally referred to as Apple Foundation Models version 11, aiming to rival Gemini 3’s capabilities.
Looking Ahead
While Apple’s AI efforts remain in their early stages, Google’s Lyria 3 demonstrates the rapid evolution of AI in creative applications like music generation. The ongoing development of Apple’s AI-powered Siri and its potential collaboration with Google’s infrastructure could narrow the gap in the future. For now, Google’s advancements set a high benchmark in AI-driven music creation, signalling exciting possibilities for the integration of AI in entertainment and creative tools.
