iPhone 18 Pro Max: Major Leaks Reveal Big Changes to Design, Performance and Cameras

pple’s next flagship is starting to take shape, and today we’ve had major new confirmations surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro Max, covering everything from internal upgrades and camera hardware to display changes and new colour options.

There’s a lot to unpack, so let’s jump straight in.

Is Apple Finally Ditching the Dynamic Island?

One of the most debated leaks today suggests Apple could be preparing to move on from the Dynamic Island.

A new report from Smart Pikachu on Weibo claims Apple is testing under-display Face ID, which would allow the Dynamic Island to disappear entirely. However, even in these tests, the selfie camera would still remain visible as a punch-hole.

That said, this rumour comes with a big dose of caution. We’ve heard “under-display Face ID” almost every year, and based on what’s known so far, it still feels unlikely for the iPhone 18 generation.

A more realistic upgrade is something we’ve heard before: Apple shrinking the current cut-out into a smaller punch-hole, pushing the display closer to a true edge-to-edge look. Full under-display sensors are reportedly still struggling with reliability and image quality, making them more likely for a future model rather than the iPhone 18.

Heavier Body, Bigger Battery

Internally, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to grow — and yes, gain a little weight.

Leaks suggest the device will weigh around 243 grams, a modest 3-gram increase over its predecessor. The reason is simple: a larger battery.

After disappointing sales of Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air, it’s clear the market is prioritising battery life over slim designs. The slightly thicker body also gives Apple more room for upgraded internals, especially when it comes to camera hardware and thermal management.

A20 Pro Chip: Apple’s Biggest Performance Leap Yet

Performance is shaping up to be one of the biggest upgrades this year.

The entire iPhone 18 lineup is expected to run on the A20 and A20 Pro, with the Pro chip built on TSMC’s new 2-nanometre process. This should bring major improvements in efficiency, lower heat output, and significantly stronger on-device AI performance compared to the A19.

Apple is also reportedly unifying memory across the lineup, with every iPhone 18 model expected to ship with 12GB of RAM, finally closing the gap between base and Pro models.

Connectivity upgrades are also in testing, including:

  • Apple’s new C2 modem
  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Bluetooth 6.1

If these make the final cut, users can expect lower latency, improved reliability, and better power efficiency.

Cameras: Apple’s Biggest Hardware Test Yet

Now to the cameras — and this is where things get especially interesting.

The iPhone 18 Pro is rumoured to feature:

  • 48MP variable-aperture main camera
  • 48MP ultra-wide
  • 64MP periscope telephoto with up to 10× optical zoom

But the Pro Max could go even further.

Insiders claim Apple is testing a stacked 200MP sensor, which would represent the biggest resolution jump in iPhone history. It’s still in the testing phase, so it’s not guaranteed — but even the possibility is significant.

Alongside new hardware, Apple is reportedly working on:

  • Smarter AI-powered video tools
  • Improved HDR in low-light scenes
  • Faster image processing via the A20’s upgraded Neural Engine

If these changes land, the Pro Max could finally separate itself more clearly from the smaller Pro in terms of camera performance.

Design Changes and New Colour Options

Design leaks have taken an interesting turn.

Earlier rumours suggested Apple was experimenting with a frosted translucent back panel, subtly revealing internal components — but newer information suggests this idea may have been scrapped.

Instead, Apple may be moving toward a cleaner, unified design, where the frame and back glass perfectly match in colour. That’s not easy to pull off when combining aluminium and glass, so it’ll be interesting to see how Apple executes it.

Three new colours are currently being tested:

  • Deep burgundy
  • Brown
  • Bold purple

Only one is expected to make it into the final lineup. The purple could replace this year’s orange, but nothing is locked in yet.

Final Thoughts: A Refined, Meaningful Upgrade

Overall, the iPhone 18 series is shaping up to be a refined but meaningful upgrade.

Apple isn’t reinventing the iPhone from scratch — instead, it’s doubling down on performance, battery life, and camera improvements, creating a more consistent and capable flagship.

If you already own an iPhone 17, this may not be a must-upgrade. But for anyone on an older model — or switching to iPhone for the first time — the iPhone 18 Pro Max is looking like a very strong option.
