LG Innotek Unveils Next-Generation Under-Display Camera for CES 2026

LG Innotek, a key supplier for Apple, is set to showcase a new under-display camera (UDC) technology at CES 2026, scheduled for January 6 to 9. Although this innovative camera module is currently designed for automotive applications, its advanced features make it a promising candidate for future smartphone use, particularly for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 20, which is rumoured to offer a truly bezel-less display experience.

Impressive Image Quality Retention with AI Enhancement

Current under-display cameras often suffer from significant image quality degradation, sometimes losing up to 30 percent of clarity due to the OLED panel obstructing the camera’s field of view. LG Innotek’s latest UDC tackles this issue with AI-based image restoration technology, employing algorithms such as deblurring and denoising to restore image quality in real-time. According to reports, this technology can retain over 99 percent of the original image quality, a substantial improvement over existing solutions.

Despite this breakthrough, the showcased UDC has a resolution capped at 1.5 megapixels, which is relatively low for smartphone standards. This limitation stems from its automotive focus, where reliability and longevity are prioritised over high resolution, given the critical safety demands in vehicles. However, LG Innotek’s decision to reduce resolution voluntarily suggests that the company possesses the capability to develop higher-resolution sensors suitable for smartphones like the iPhone 20.

Potential Impact on Apple’s Future Devices

LG Innotek has been reported as a supplier for Apple’s under-display camera components, making this new technology particularly relevant. The iPhone 20 is expected to push the boundaries of design by delivering a fully bezel-less front, and an advanced UDC like LG Innotek’s could be integral to achieving this vision. Additionally, Apple’s upcoming iPhone Fold is rumoured to feature an under-display camera, which may utilise similar technology.

For the nearer term, the iPhone 18 lineup is said to be experimenting with in-screen Face ID, potentially adopting a punch-hole front camera as a step towards minimising bezels. With LG Innotek’s proven advancements and Apple’s long-standing partnership with the supplier, there is a strong foundation for refining under-display camera technology over the next couple of years.

Looking Ahead

As LG Innotek prepares to reveal its new UDC at CES 2026, the technology’s transition from automotive to smartphone use remains a possibility. Given Apple’s ambition for a truly bezel-less iPhone 20 and ongoing innovations in front-facing camera integration, this development is one to watch closely. With ample time before the iPhone 20’s expected launch, Apple and its suppliers can continue improving under-display camera solutions to meet the high standards required for flagship devices.
