Qualcomm to Adopt Samsung’s Advanced Cooling Tech for New Snapdragon Chips

Qualcomm is reportedly set to integrate Samsung’s Heat Pass Block (HPB) technology into its upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipsets. This move comes as traditional cooling methods like vapour chambers begin to reach their limits in managing the heat generated by increasingly powerful processors. The HPB, which has already been successfully implemented in Samsung’s Exynos 2600, offers a promising solution to improve thermal resistance and keep temperatures in check.

How Heat Pass Block Enhances Thermal Management

The HPB is essentially a copper-based heatsink placed directly onto the silicon die, with the DRAM chip positioned adjacent rather than on top of the SoC. This design contrasts with older chip layouts where the DRAM sat atop the processor, creating a heat trap that forced reliance on external cooling components like vapour chambers and graphite sheets. Copper’s excellent heat conductivity allows the HPB to dissipate heat more efficiently, potentially reducing chipset temperatures by up to 16 percent, as seen with Samsung’s Exynos 2600.

Given the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s already high clock speeds, the thermal constraints of passive cooling solutions have become apparent. Although TSMC’s advanced 2nm manufacturing process helps improve efficiency, it alone cannot fully mitigate the heat produced by the aggressive performance targets Qualcomm aims for. The HPB technology is therefore a necessary upgrade to maintain performance without overheating.

Background and Testing Insights

Leaker Fixed-focus digital cameras recently shared on Weibo that Qualcomm is testing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro with clock speeds reaching 5.00GHz. Such high frequencies, achievable in controlled environments without thermal or power restrictions, highlight the need for more effective cooling solutions in real-world smartphone designs. The HPB technology is believed to be part of these tests, aiming to enable Qualcomm’s chipsets to sustain peak performance while managing heat efficiently.

Comparatively, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, despite outperforming Apple’s A19 Pro in benchmarks like Geekbench 6, consumes significantly more power—around 61 percent more—to do so. This aggressive power scaling suggests Qualcomm will continue pushing performance boundaries with the Gen 6 series, making advanced cooling solutions like HPB even more critical.

What to Expect Next

As Qualcomm prepares to launch its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro chipsets later this year, the integration of Samsung’s Heat Pass Block technology could mark a significant step forward in thermal management for flagship mobile processors. This development will be crucial for maintaining high clock speeds and overall device performance without overheating, especially in compact smartphone form factors. Tech enthusiasts and industry watchers should keep an eye on official announcements and further leaks to see how this technology impacts real-world device performance.
