Samsung Aims Big with the Wide Fold
Samsung is reportedly gearing up to launch its new foldable smartphone, the Wide Fold, with plans to produce a substantial one million units in 2026. This ambitious production target signals Samsung’s strong confidence in the device and suggests the company intends to roll it out across a broad range of markets, unlike some of its previous special edition foldables which saw very limited releases.
Key Features and Display Design
The Wide Fold is expected to feature a unique 7.6-inch inner folding display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, making it wider and squatter compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s nearly square 6:5 screen. This design choice is likely aimed at enhancing video viewing experiences, as the wider screen better matches typical video content ratios, reducing the amount of letterboxing when watching 16:9 videos. Complementing the inner display, the phone will also sport a 5.4-inch outer screen for use when folded.
Context and Comparisons
Samsung’s production goal for the Wide Fold dwarfs the numbers for previous foldable models such as the Galaxy Z TriFold, which shipped only around 30,000 units, and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Special Edition, limited to approximately 500,000 units. Both of those devices were released in very few countries, whereas the Wide Fold appears set for a much wider launch. This move could be seen as Samsung positioning itself strongly in the foldable market amid rising competition.
Interestingly, the Wide Fold’s wider display format aligns with trends seen in other foldables like OPPO’s Find N series and Google’s Pixel Fold, which also favour a stubbier, more compact inner screen design. Additionally, Samsung’s timing coincides with reports that Apple is preparing its own foldable iPhone featuring a similar 4:3 aspect ratio internal display. This suggests the Wide Fold may be a strategic response to Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable segment.
Looking Ahead
With Samsung aiming to produce one million Wide Fold units, the device could mark a significant step in the company’s foldable strategy, potentially reaching a much larger audience than previous special editions. Market reception will be crucial, and Samsung may adjust production accordingly. Tech enthusiasts should watch closely for official announcements and further leaks as the launch approaches.
