Sony Confident in PS5 Memory Supply for 2026

In its recent third-quarter financial report, Sony revealed reassuring news for PlayStation 5 enthusiasts: the company has secured enough memory supply to sustain PS5 production through 2026. Lin Tao, Sony’s chief financial officer, confirmed that the firm has managed to obtain the “minimum quantity necessary” to meet demand for the year-end selling season of the next fiscal year. This development comes amid ongoing global memory shortages that have impacted various technology sectors.

Impact on Pricing and Sales Strategy

Despite a staggered price increase for the PS5 last year—first in Europe, the UK, and Australia in April 2025, followed by the US in August 2025—Sony’s current memory supply stability suggests that further hardware price hikes related to memory shortages may be avoided in 2026. However, Tao indicated that any necessary price adjustments might instead focus on software and services. He emphasised that Sony plans to prioritise monetising its existing PS5 user base by expanding revenue from software and network services, minimising the impact of increased memory costs on hardware sales.

Context and Previous Developments

The PS5 has enjoyed strong sales momentum, having surpassed 92.2 million units sold as of December 31, 2025. Notably, the launch of “Ghost of Yotei” outperformed the sales of “Ghost of Tsushima,” highlighting continued consumer interest in the platform. Last year, Sony also raised the price of its PlayStation Plus subscription service in April 2025, signalling a broader strategy to dynamically adjust pricing to maximise profitability as the console cycle matures.

Looking Ahead

Sony’s ability to secure sufficient memory supply for PS5 production through 2026 is a positive sign for gamers hoping to purchase the console without facing significant shortages or price surges. While hardware pricing appears stable for now, the company’s focus on software and service monetisation suggests that PlayStation’s ecosystem will continue evolving in that direction. It will be worth watching how Sony balances supply chain challenges and pricing strategies as the PS5 cycle progresses.
