TECNO’s Innovative Modular Phone Concept

TECNO is set to present a striking new approach to modular smartphones at MWC 2026 with its ultra-thin modular phone concept. The company aims to revive interest in modular designs by focusing on a sleek, slim profile that avoids the bulkiness typically associated with attachable hardware. This concept phone features what TECNO calls “Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology,” allowing users to snap on various hardware modules seamlessly without compromising the phone’s slim form factor.

Key Features and Modular Accessories

The base device itself measures an impressively thin 4.9mm, making it one of the slimmest phones in existence. TECNO claims that even when modules are attached, the overall thickness remains competitive with conventional slab smartphones. The modular ecosystem includes around ten accessories designed for different use cases. Among them is a slim 4.5mm Power Bank module that effectively doubles the phone’s battery life, an Action Camera module that offers new shooting angles, and a Telephoto Lens module which utilises the phone’s display as a live viewfinder. This modular approach encourages users to carry only the attachments they need, rather than dealing with permanently integrated hardware that may go unused.

Design Variants and Aesthetic Choices

TECNO plans to showcase two distinct designs for this modular concept. The ATOM edition features a minimalistic look with a silver aluminium finish and subtle red accents, appealing to users who prefer understated elegance. In contrast, the MODA edition embraces a more “geek-inspired” aesthetic, catering to those who appreciate a bolder style. Both versions share the same modular capabilities, highlighting the versatility of the underlying technology.

Context and Future Prospects

Modular smartphones have struggled to gain mainstream traction in the past, often hindered by bulky attachments and limited consumer appeal. TECNO’s concept attempts to address these issues by prioritising a slim, lightweight design that integrates modularity without sacrificing portability. While it is unlikely that this exact concept phone will reach the consumer market, TECNO suggests that the underlying modular technology is scalable and may be incorporated into future devices in some form. This could signal a renewed interest in modularity as manufacturers seek to offer more customisable and adaptable smartphone experiences.

As MWC 2026 approaches, it will be interesting to see how TECNO’s modular phone concept is received and whether it influences broader trends in smartphone design. The balance between modular functionality and sleek design could be key to making add-ons appealing to a wider audience once again.
