Google Expands AirDrop Compatibility to More Android Devices

Google made waves in late 2025 by enabling its Quick Share feature on Pixel 10 devices to work seamlessly with Apple’s AirDrop, allowing effortless file transfers between Android and iOS ecosystems. Now, the company has confirmed plans to broaden this interoperability to a wider range of Android devices throughout 2026.

Technical Details Behind the Integration

The breakthrough came when Google reverse-engineered AirDrop without any direct collaboration from Apple, effectively creating a workaround that connects Pixel 10’s Quick Share with Apple’s file-sharing protocol. This was achieved by upgrading the Quick Share Extension from a basic system app stub into a fully-fledged APK available on the Google Play Store, enabling true AirDrop compatibility on Pixel phones.

To ensure the security of this cross-platform communication, Google utilised the memory-safe programming language Rust, which enforces strict ownership and borrowing rules at compile time to prevent memory safety issues. Additionally, the company conducted extensive internal threat modelling, privacy assessments, and red team penetration tests. Google also partnered with cybersecurity firm NetSPI to further validate the robustness of the file transfer feature.

Context and Future Prospects

Speaking at a press briefing during Google’s Pixel Labs tour in Taipei, Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform, revealed that after successfully launching AirDrop interoperability last year, Google is now focused on expanding this capability to many more devices. Kay emphasised that the team invested significant effort to ensure compatibility not only with iPhones but also with iPads and MacBooks.

He added that now that the proof of concept has been established, Google is collaborating with partners to extend this functionality across the broader Android ecosystem. While specific devices that will receive this feature have not yet been confirmed, the company hinted that exciting announcements are forthcoming.

What to Expect Next

As Google prepares to roll out AirDrop compatibility beyond Pixel phones, Android users can look forward to improved cross-platform file sharing with Apple devices in the near future. This development marks a significant step towards bridging the gap between the two dominant mobile ecosystems, enhancing user convenience and interoperability.
