Significant Price Cuts Hit the iPhone Air in China

Apple’s iPhone Air, which debuted in China only three months ago, is already facing substantial price reductions on major online retail platforms. Leading e-commerce sites like Tmall and JD.com have rolled out promotions slashing the price by up to $415, a surprising move given the device’s initial strong sales and premium positioning. This sharp discount suggests that the iPhone Air has struggled to maintain its appeal among consumers in the region.

Key Specifications and Consumer Reception

The iPhone Air launched with impressive hardware, including the powerful A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM, which positioned it as a flagship contender. However, some critical features have drawn criticism, notably its single primary camera setup and relatively small 3,149mAh battery. Despite Apple’s software optimisations in iOS designed to extend battery life, the device reportedly underperformed against rivals such as the Galaxy S25 Edge in endurance tests. These shortcomings have likely contributed to the device’s rapid depreciation and declining demand.

Price Drop Details and Market Impact

Apple’s official store on Tmall reduced the iPhone Air’s price by 2,000 yuan (approximately $287), bringing the cost down to 5,499 yuan ($789), a significant decrease from its original $999 US launch price. JD.com followed suit with a similar promotion, offering an additional trade-in subsidy of up to 400 yuan ($57), which pushes the total discount to around 2,900 yuan ($415). Such aggressive pricing indicates that the ‘slim smartphone’ concept behind the iPhone Air has not resonated well with the Chinese market.

Background and Future Outlook

Since its release in October, the iPhone Air has experienced the steepest depreciation rate of any iPhone model launched since 2022, losing nearly 48% of its value within just ten weeks. Despite these challenges, Apple appears committed to the Air line, reportedly preparing a second-generation model featuring a dual-camera system but retaining a similar design. This successor is expected to launch in spring 2027, although production volumes may be lower compared to other iPhone models.

For now, consumers in China have a rare opportunity to purchase a feature-rich iPhone Air at a considerably reduced price, reflecting the device’s struggle to maintain its initial momentum in a highly competitive market.
