Samsung’s DS Division Rewards Employees with Generous Bonuses

Samsung’s Device Solutions (DS) division, which oversees critical semiconductor components such as DRAM, NAND, chipsets, image sensors, and wafers, is celebrating a remarkable turnaround. The company has announced that employees in this division will receive performance-based bonuses of up to 100% of their base salary, reflecting the division’s robust recovery and growing profitability. This substantial bonus increase marks a significant jump from the 25% bonus awarded in the first half of the year.

Key Drivers Behind the DS Division’s Success

The surge in bonuses is largely attributed to strong demand and supply of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) products, particularly the HBM3E modules supplied to NVIDIA. Additionally, rising DRAM prices have contributed significantly to the division’s improved financial performance. Industry reports suggest that Samsung has overtaken Micron in the HBM space thanks to breakthroughs in HBM3E and HBM4 technologies. However, the real profit driver remains DRAM production, which Samsung has prioritised, especially in DDR5 manufacturing, to maximise revenue amid a persistent global shortage.

Samsung’s estimated operating profit is projected to reach $73 billion by 2026, underscoring the importance of DRAM in the company’s semiconductor strategy. Notably, Apple has reportedly chosen Samsung as its primary supplier of LPDDR5X RAM for the upcoming iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 models, further bolstering Samsung’s memory business.

Bonuses Across Samsung’s Other Divisions

Beyond the DS division, Samsung’s Mobile Experience division is also sharing in the rewards, with employees set to receive bonuses amounting to 75% of their base salary. This increase is credited to the strong sales performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 smartphones. Meanwhile, the System LSI and Foundry sectors have been granted a more modest 25% bonus, though these figures may rise if Samsung maintains its current growth trajectory.

Advances in Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology

Samsung’s semiconductor advancements extend beyond memory products. The company recently unveiled the Exynos 2600 chipset, signalling readiness to deploy its next-generation 2nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process technology. Initial mass production yields for this chipset were around 50% in September, with improvements expected by December. The Exynos 2600 is anticipated to power the Galaxy Z Flip 8 next year, showcasing Samsung’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge manufacturing processes.

In addition to internal uses, Samsung has secured significant external contracts, including a multi-billion-dollar deal with Tesla and orders from Chinese cryptocurrency equipment manufacturers for its 2nm GAA technology. Despite earlier criticism of its 4nm process yields, Samsung has also landed a $100 million chip order from a U.S.-based AI company, indicating growing confidence in its foundry capabilities.

Outlook for Samsung’s Semiconductor Business

Industry analysts suggest that the current DRAM shortage, which has helped Samsung’s DS division thrive, is expected to persist until the fourth quarter of 2027. This extended period of scarcity provides Samsung with a valuable window to strengthen other sub-divisions within the DS sector and further enhance profitability. As Samsung continues to innovate in semiconductor manufacturing and expand its foundry business, the company’s performance-based bonuses may reflect these ongoing successes in the years ahead.
