Exynos Galaxy S26 to Feature On-Device AI Image Generation

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S26 series is shaping up to be a significant step forward in smartphone AI capabilities, particularly for the Exynos-powered variant. According to a report from the Korean news outlet Seoul Economic Daily, the Galaxy S26 with the Exynos 2600 chipset will support on-device text-to-image generation using a lightweight version of Stable Diffusion AI models. This feature, tentatively named EdgeFusion, promises to generate 512 by 512 pixel images within seconds, all without requiring an internet connection.

Key Specifications and AI Enhancements

The EdgeFusion technology is developed in partnership with Nota AI, a Korean artificial intelligence company known for optimising AI models for efficient, lightweight deployment. Samsung’s implementation is said to be tailored specifically for the Exynos 2600, which benefits from an advanced 2nm architecture and a significantly enhanced Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This combination allows for rapid image generation directly on the device, addressing privacy concerns associated with cloud-based AI processing.

Notably, the report suggests that Samsung’s EdgeFusion model outperforms Qualcomm’s previous demonstrations of AI image generation on Snapdragon chipsets. While Qualcomm has showcased the capability of its hardware, no major phone manufacturer has yet introduced a consumer-ready feature for on-device image generation. Samsung could be the first to bring this innovation to market with the Galaxy S26.

Context and Industry Implications

Currently, most smartphones rely on a hybrid AI approach where complex tasks such as image generation are handled in the cloud, while simpler processes occur locally. This method raises privacy and latency concerns. Samsung’s move to integrate a capable on-device AI model represents a shift toward more private and efficient AI use in mobile devices. The company also plans to collaborate with various global technology firms to further accelerate on-device media generation, though specific partners have not been named.

It remains unclear whether the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-based Galaxy S26 models will receive a similar AI image generation feature. Samsung typically strives to maintain feature parity across its chipset variants, so it is possible that a comparable capability could be introduced for Snapdragon versions as well. However, confirmation will likely come only at the official launch event scheduled for 25 February.

Additional Software Upgrades

Alongside the hardware advancements, Samsung is expected to unveil a more sophisticated iteration of its Bixby assistant as part of the One UI 8.5 update. This new version reportedly incorporates Perplexity AI technology, enhancing internet search functions and delivering smarter, more context-aware responses. These improvements underscore Samsung’s broader strategy to integrate advanced AI features deeply into both hardware and software.

As the Galaxy S26 launch approaches, the potential for on-device AI image generation marks a compelling reason for consumers to consider the Exynos variant. This development could set a new standard for privacy-conscious AI applications in smartphones and pave the way for more innovative features in future devices.

We will be watching closely for more details as Samsung’s February event draws near, particularly regarding how these AI capabilities will be implemented across different Galaxy S26 models.
